Every North Star Part I & II (from Tales of a City), Videos, single channel, 6m and 9m, 2010

The single channel videos Every North Star Part I and Every North Star Part II from the project Tales of a City are complementary to each other. Part II gazes at the relationship among the only female jockey at Busan Racecourse, her favorite horse the North Star with whom she had continual victories, and a female jockey from abroad. The tension generated by media saturation and the inescapable bridle between the jockeys and the horse produce a fatal result. Meanwhile, Part I is tracing the pedigree of the North Star and interweaves the settlement process of horse racing industry and import of Thoroughbreds after the war in Korea. The project Tales of a City comprising pieces of various media, deals with microcosmic anecdotal stories of ordinary people lived in the city of Busan in South Korea.

Bio

Interested in the relationship between language, sound and image and the elements’ formalities, Ayoung Kim seeks possible integrations, articulations and collisions of things in between time, space, structure and syntax. In doing so, she plays with the notions of crossings, transmissions, translations and reversibility by focusing on unlikely encounters of the ideas. Actively working with composers and film/theatre crew, she acquires the device of storytelling, narrative structure and rhetoric to evoke alternative forms of reading, listening and thinking of our present human conditions. She is a scriptwriter as well as a director, a sound engineer and a diagram-maker, and her works stand as experiments on script writing and narrative structures in themselves, in linguistic and sonic levels.

Recently as an artist in residence at Pavillon Neuflize OBC Research Lab of Palais de Tokyo (2015-2016), she had a solo show In This Vessel We Shall Be Kept at Palais de Tokyo (2016) and created a performance In This Vessel We Shall Be Kept  at Palais Garnier with a choreographer from the Opéra National de Paris (2016). She exhibited/showcased her works in theaters as well as in exhibition spaces. She presented her works at All the World's Futures, the 56th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia, Italy (2015); Maraya Art Centre, Dubai, UAE (2015); Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea (2014); Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea (2012); Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), New York, US (2011); Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro(MAM), Brazil (2011); 176/Zabludowicz Collection, London, UK (2011); Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK (2010) and many others. She was awarded The British Institution Award from the Royal Academy of Arts in the UK in 2010 and Young Artist of the Year Award from the Ministry of Culture in Korea, 2015.
